2048 Strategy: Keep Your Board Open

Position high-value tiles, control your moves, and create reliable merge chains in 2048.

Keep your largest tile in a corner

Choose a corner for your largest tile. Arrange the tiles along its row or column in descending order so smaller tiles can feed into it.

Frequent changes of direction can break that order. Change direction when it creates a useful merge or prevents the board from closing.

Make space before the board fills up

A new tile may appear after every move. Favor moves that merge tiles or bring matching values together, and avoid shuffling tiles without opening space.

When a row is nearly full, check whether the move will leave at least one safe direction for your next turn.

Plan around tile order

A descending chain makes it easier to absorb new tiles and build consecutive merges. If two large tiles are out of order, move the smaller one into place before pulling the largest tile away from its corner.

Look one or two moves ahead: identify which tiles will slide, which will merge, and whether the following move will still have room.
